Pregnancy Massage
Postpartum massages can start as early as you feel comfortable after a healthy, uncomplicated birth. However, it is always a good idea to consult your doctor first. For cesarian births, you will need to wait around 6 weeks to allow your scar time to heal and decrease the risk of any post- surgical complications.
Pregnancy massages use special positioning and pillows to provide comfort and support. At Thrive, we opt for side lying techniques once you are no longer comfortable lying on your stomach. Treatment is focused on relieving the unique strains of pregnancy and pressure is modified ais certain areas to keep you and baby safe.
Hot Stone Massage
The stones are heated to a safe, comfortable temperature of approximately 130-150°F for massage. Your therapist will check in with you many times throughout treatment to ensure you feel okay with the temperature as everyone has a different tolerance to heat.
Hot Stone Therapy allows heat to sink into deep layers of your muscles and soft tissue. This relieves muscle tension, improves circulation, and causes a profound sense of relaxation and calm. ( Don’t be surprised if you drift off during this one)
While Hot Stone Therapy is traditionally a more relaxation focused treatment, we can include therapeutic techniques as well. In this case, the stones can be used with deeper pressure or may be interspersed with traditional therapeutic techniques.
There are certain precautions that need to be taken during a Hot Stone treatment. It is absolutely necessary to inform your therapist of the following to ensure a safe treatment can be provided:
– any rods or pins from surgeries
– sensitive/ thin skin areas
– medications you are taking
– pregnancy
– cardiovascular conditions
– open wounds
– diabetes or any sensory impairment
Cupping Therapy
Cupping is recommended for relieving muscle tension, improving circulation, reducing fascial restrictions, and improving mobility.
Cupping uses negative pressure to pull the muscles and fascia away from the body. Hard plastic or silicone cups may be used in either a dynamic or static approach, depending on goals and tissues being targeted.
It is possibly to see markings present after cupping if the cups are left in the same spot for a period of time. How long they last and the darkness of the discoloration depends on your circulation, stagnation in the tissues, and how the cups are applied. If you are concerned about bruising, let your therapist know and we can opt for a more dynamic approach.
Cupping can not be used on open wounds, inflamed or infected tissues, or over a fracture or sprain. Those with certain skin conditions, lesions or thin skin may not be able to receive cupping. Please let your therapist know about any medications you are taking or sensory impairments you may have.
Counselling
Counseling and therapy involve talking to a professional to address and manage emotional and mental health issues, work on interpersonal relationships, and provide a space for self development and growth.
